Countdown to January 8, 2023 at 11:00 AM (UTC)
Confirmed
The second season of In/Spectre will be broadcasted on January 8, 2023, as confirmed by the anime’s website and the recently-released PV.
Brain’s Base returns to produce the second season, along with most of the staff from the first season. Director Keiji Gotoh will also return to helm the project.
Fans of this beloved yokai anime are thrilled to finally confirm the official release dates.
It could be recalled that the broadcast of season 2 was postponed “due to various circumstances.”
Brain’s Base probably wanted to replicate their success by giving season 2 an early January release, just like the previous season in 2020.
Yeah, let’s just stick to that theory.
In/Spectre Season 2 Trailer
The In/Spectre production staff released this 3rd promotional video on November 16, 2022.
Highlighted on the video were the premiere date of January 8, 2023, and other broadcasting details.
In/Spectre’s website also released these details via an announcement, along with other information on season 2.
The video showed more of Kuro and Kotoko’s dealings with more yokai, as well as scenes of the new characters Masayuki Muroi and Yuki-Onna.
Another character featured is Rikka Sakuragawa, Kuro’s cousin and another survivor of the yokai-meat-eating incident in the past.
These characters were prominently featured on the website as part of the promotion of In/Spectre season 2.
Another noticeable bit in the 3rd PV is the lovey-dovey moments of Kuro and Kotoko, who have already become an official couple by the end of season 1.
The two leads’ romance can be glimpsed in the first two PV teasers released on November 6, 2020, and July 4, 2022.
The latest “situation visual” featured on the website also showed Kuro and Kotoko rushing through a street, seemingly on a date.
In/Spectre Season Story and Season 2 Expectations
In/Spectre is a supernatural romance based on a Japanese novel written by Kyo Shirodaira and published by Kodansha in 2011.
The story draws upon two storylines: the two leads’ romance; and their involvement in the world of yokai, supernatural beings in Japanese folklore.
Amid a post-break-up recovery, Kuro Sakuragawa one day meets the enigmatic Kotoko Iwanaga.
Kotoko declares her love to Kuro, revealing that she fell in love at first sight when they met two years ago.
Kotoko also explains that she is, in fact, a Goddess of Wisdom and is related to yokai.
Kuro doubts her identity, although he himself is an anomaly produced by consuming the meat of two different yokai.
This guy is both an immortal and a seer, abilities he got from the yokai meat he ate.
After a fight with a bull ayakashi in the library, both finally confirm their identities.
The unlikely duo agrees to help each other solve cases involving yokai while also exploring their budding romance.
In/Spectre is a well-blended mix of supernatural thriller and romance.
It was rare seeing these two polarizing genres put together the way In/Spectre does. Hence, the immense popularity of the novel, manga, and anime.
Season 2 will bring the duo to more yokai adventures. The teaser PVs reveal bigger cases with bigger stakes.
The fan-favorite Yuki-onna arc will also get its own spotlight after introducing its central characters, Yuki-Onna and Muroi.
And, of course, fans should look forward to more romantic moments between Kuro and Kotoko, as all three PVs showed only a fraction of them.
In/Spectre News
Hiro Kyohara initially started illustrating Shirodaira’s In/Spectre novel when the second novel was published.
When the series changed imprint from Kodansha Novels to Kodansha Taiga in 2019, illustrator Chasiba Katase took over.
Katase then began the manga adaptation of In/Spectre on Kodansha’s Shōnen Magazine R in April 2015.
Crunchyroll announced on February 25, 2020, the inclusion of In/Spectre in its Crunchyroll Originals slate.
Director Keiji Gotoh led the production at Brain’s Base, and In/Spectre’s first season ran from January to March 2020 with 12 episodes.
On November 26, 2020, Kodansha announced In/Spectre’s renewal for a second season.
More than a year later, the official anime website revealed new cast members and an October 2022 premiere in an announcement posted on March 4, 2022.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances not yet revealed, the second season was delayed to January 2023 after the website posted a short message about its postponement.
In the following months, though, the fans were appeased with the release of additional visuals and two PVs, with the last one ultimately revealing the premiere on January 8, 2023.
Funnily enough, even the author Kyo Shirodaira revealed that he was not expecting a second season at all.
“I was honestly surprised… I will be watching how Miss Iwanaga in the animation moves again,” Shirodaira added.
Shirodaira and the fans of his work can again finally see the characters of In/Spectre do much more other than moving in its much-awaited return next year.
