SK8 The Infinity Story

SK8 The Infinity (stylized as SK∞) is an anime original series entirely produced by studio BONES, the production company behind Eureka Seven, Soul Eater, and Full Metal Alchemist.

The story follows a group of hardcore, but passionate skaters in Okinawa, who partake in underground skating competitions after midnight.

The races (known as “S”) occur underground in an abandoned mine, lined with abandoned mine carts and various dangerous obstacles.

Reki, a high school student who races and is incredibly passionate about skateboarding, enters a race one night but unfortunately breaks his board and his arm during the race.

Now unable to practice, Reki meets a new classmate, Langa, who has never skated before but needs money – and needs money fast.

Langa is soon thrown into his first race, and unbeknownst to everyone, he holds a “trap card” that might just help him win.

And so begins the hardcore skating world of SK8 The Infinity!

The series has also now spawned a spin-off manga entitled SK8 Chill Out!

SK8 The Infinity is available to stream on Crunchyroll for North American viewers.

As the series is an original feature and not based on previous light novels or manga, SK8 The Infinity has an interesting production.

SK8 The Infinity Production

The original concept was created by Hiroko Utsumi along with BONES. Utsumi is an anime director, animator, and artist best known for directing Free! By Kyoto Animation.

Utsumi also directed Banana Fish before her work on SK8 The Infinity.

The series was announced in September 2020, with Utsumi directing the series while writer Ichiro Okouchi composed the series’ script.

Utsumi wanted to make sure that the skateboards designed for the series would work in real life if they were built. Artist Ayumi Kakei was brought on to design the Reki and Lagna’s skateboards.

After Kakei, in total, five artists designed the individual skateboards used by the characters in the series, a very unusual situation in the animation industry.

The characters’ moves on their skateboards were also influenced by real skateboarding pros like Rodney Mullen.

The characters were designed by Michinori Chiba, who previously worked on character designs for Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

The series has more news beyond just behind-the-scenes information.
