The first announcement was tweeted by Monthly Gangan Joker magazine on March 18, 2022. It stated that the adaptation of Ragna Crimson is scheduled to premiere in 2023.
Eight months later, the official website of Ragna Crimson revealed the main cast, staff, visual teaser, and a PV. In November 2022, the staff held a campaign revealing the behind the scene of anime production.
There are six sessions span for one month in which the cast of Ragna and Crimson talked about the project. The long version campaign was compiled and uploaded to YouTube on December 30, 2022.
The second campaign was started in February 2023. Instead of the cast, the interview was held with the director of Ragna Crimson, Ken Takahashi. Three short videos were uploaded to their official Twitter account featuring how the anime is made.
At the recent AnimeJapan 2023 event, Ragna Crimson was also present. Unfortunately, no new information was released.
With how steady the progress is, it is estimated that Ragna Crimson will premiere in late 2023.

Ragna Crimson Trailer
The PV was released on November 18, 2022. It tells the world building around the series as well as the key character introduction.
The PV also reveals the VAs for the three main characters. They are:
- Kobayashi Chiaki as Ragna
- Murase Ayumu as Crimson
- Inori Minase as Leonica
Ken Takahashi (Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!!) is directing the anime at SILVER LINK. Deko Akao (The Case Study of Vanitas) is working on the series composition, while Shinpei Aoki (Our Last Crusader of the Rise of a New World) is drawing the character design.
It is safe to say that the series is already in the right hand. With Ken’s past records, Jujutsu no Kaisen the Movie and FGO: Final Singularity the Movie, we can expect Ragna Crimson will, at least, be above-average anime.
Ragna Crimson Story
In a world where Dragons rule the sky, land, and sea, those who bear the hope of mankind are called Dragon Hunters. Each of them should surpass their human limitation to even scratch the Dragon.
There are two ways of defeating a Dragon, kill it with a silver weapon or bask it in sunlight. That’s why, for an oblivious reason, Dragon only rampages at night.
The story follows Ragna, a sidekick of Dragon Hunter prodigy, Leonica. Though he is weak, he always follows Leonica in her raid. The reason Leo allows him is because of her hunch that Ragna will someday become stronger than her.
For days, Ragna has had a vision of the future. In his vision, he sees Leonica dies protecting him. Thus, he trains harder than ever.
One day, when the sun is still high, the eighth seat of Dragon attacks the town both of them reside in. Ragna desperately pleads Leo to flee from the city. As the prodigy, she refuses to do so.
That’s when Ragna sees his future self. In the future, he lost everything. Leo and everyone who approaches him dies leaving him alone. He repeatedly battles the dragon whether he ends up with a win or defeat. But in the end, he always survives.
When he finally defeats the second seat, he no longer has something to protect. It leaves a big hole in his heart. That’s why he uses a kind of method to transfer his strength to the past.
When the present Ragna receives the future-self strength, he can save Leo from her bad ending.
At that moment he understands, the one who can company him in his quest to eradicate dragons is either the one who won’t sadden him with death or the one who won’t die at all.
Only Crimson, the former first seat of Dragon Monarch who becomes a traitor after a failed attempt to kill the Dragon God, can join him.
Though the motive of Ragna and Crimson is different, their goal is the same: to destroy the dragon monarchs.
Ragna Crimson News
Ragna Crimson is a Japanese manga created by Daiki Kobayashi. It began its serialization on Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker in March 2017.
As of August 2022, the chapters were compiled into 11 volumes of manga. In North America, the English version is licensed and published by Square Enix Manga & Books imprint.
Currently, the latest English version is the eighth volume which was released on March 14, 2023. The upcoming two volumes will be published in June and August 2023, respectively.
The official Twitter for Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine revealed in 2021 that the manga would soon enter the final arc. Later, the tenth volume of Ragna Crimson, which was released in April 2022, hinted that the final arc would begin in the eleventh volume of manga.
Maybe Kobayashi doesn’t plan to make it longer than it has to be. From his previous project, Ragna Crimson has the longest serialization.
With a solid story, the manga has survived for six years and still counting. Meanwhile, his first manga only lasted two years, while the second only lasted less than a year.
Let’s hope that this anime will get a success and Kobayashi can make another manga in the future.
