Everybody’s favorite shield-wielder, Maple, is back (sorry, Shield Hero Naofumi), along with her game-breaking shenanigans for a season 2 that will premiere on January 11, 2023.
The debut reveal was announced via a live-streamed special for the second season of BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense by Kadokawa on December 17, 2022.
The special also brought fans a Christmas visual, news about home video release plans, a new PV, and a preview of the season’s first episode, “Bōgyo Tokka to Christmas” (Defense Specialization and Christmas).
Initially announced to broadcast in 2022, the second season of Bofuri was confirmed to join an overloaded January 2023 window last September 20, 2022.
After another victorious campaign in NewWorld Online, defense goddess Maple and her Maple Tree Guild are soon heading towards new adventures, as seen on the first teaser PV and visuals.
Will Maple continue giving NewWorld’s developers headaches with her goofy overpowered luck? Her legions of fans inside the online game and outside the anime can only look forward to it.

BOFURI Anime Season 2 Release Date
Countdown to January 11, 2023 at 11:00 AM (UTC)
Confirmed
The live-streamed special held by Kadokawa last December 17, 2022, finally revealed the awaited premiere of Bofuri season 2: January 11, 2023.
BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense season 2 will debut on the AT-X channel on January 11 at 11:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. EST).
The new season will also be available on Asahi Broadcasting Corporation, Tokyo MX, TV Aichi, and BS11.
Docomo’s d Anime Store has first dibs on Bofuri season 2 as it will stream the anime first before other streaming services.
Crunchyroll will also broadcast the new season as it airs in Japan.
The streaming service announced its intention to stream the anime’s latest season during its panel at this year’s CCXP event in early December 2022.
Bofuri was supposedly slated for a Fall 2022 release. However, it was only confirmed that the second season was pushed back to 2023 after the September 20 announcement.
It has already been rumored that a delay, or worse, a cancellation, was probable after Silver Link remained silent even when September rolled in.
After Silver Link released a teaser PV and teaser visual, thwarting rumors of the anime’s discontinuation, fans should be at ease.
The anime’s official website even published back-to-back news about the second season, including information about season 1’s rebroadcast details.
BOFURI Anime Season 2 Trailer
Kadokawa unveiled Bofuri 2’s second promotional video during the live-streamed special last December 17, 2022.
After several silent months following an announcement early in 2022, the most important news Bofuri fans received in the last quarter was definitely the first teaser PV released on September 20, 2022.
Seeing Maple go on adventures once again quelled the restless hearts of her fans.
This teaser PVs showed a glimpse of Bofuri’s NewWorld characters on a big adventure in a new world, as the anime website shared.
Highlighted in the video were the members of the top guilds Maple Tree, Kingdom of the Flame Emperor, and Congregation of the Holy Swords.
The teaser visual released on October 6, 2022, backed this up, prominently showing Maple Tree guild members riding atop Syrup flying towards somewhere; the other two guilds can be seen following them.
BOFURI Anime Story and Season 2 Expectations
IS SHE THE GAME’S LAST BOSS?!
Yen Press’ opening line in the description for the first volume of the Bofuri light novel series perfectly sums up Maple, a character created by VRMMO noobie Kaede Honjou.
And Maple is what happens when you can literally wear plot armor.
Kaede one day decides to try playing the new virtual reality game NewWorld Online at the behest of her best friend, Sally.
Sally is a pro gamer, the kind that dominates games and wins awards. But unfortunately, her mother bars her from playing for a few days, leaving Kaede to her own devices.
Kaede goes on and creates her character, which she names Maple, selecting a great shield as her weapon in fear of getting hurt.
Any RPG enthusiast would always consider where to put their stats, weighing them according to their job classes and whatnot.
Kaede decidedly avoids that and puts every stat point on VIT to boost her defense. She keeps at it until she gains a skin thicker than the town walls.
Although the slowest, Maple becomes a mobile fortress, and gains top-grade weapons through Kaede’s super-defense and a bit of overpowered luck (not the stat one).
Her real-world logic is bizarre inside the game, but for some reason, Maple always wins and gains massive enhancements as she fumbles her way to the top.
Sally joins the game later, and together, the two of them gather new friends and build one of the strongest guilds in NewWorld Online, Maple Tree.
At the end of Bofuri Season 1, Maple Tree notches a stunning win against the Congregation of the Holy Swords.
Maple nearly dies after being whittled down by Payne of the Holy Swords. But of course, since it’s Maple, she is left with 1 HP and manages to turn the fight around.
Using a skill called Atrocity from her Black Rose Armor, Maple transforms into a giant demon. And it’s OP stacked upon OP.
Maple defeats the other Holy Swords and carries her guild to a third-place finish.
Season 2 should build upon this victory, with a motivated Maple Tree gearing towards another adventure.
The teaser PV and visuals hint at a big journey, so fans should anticipate another series of fights and encounters that will boost Maple and her team while also making the NewWorld devs cry.
BOFURI News
Bofuri, or Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense in full, is a Japanese light novel series that started as one of the many popular self-published novels from Shōsetsuka ni Narō.
Author Yuumikan began writing Bofuri in 2016, and it featured illustrations from Koin.
Fujimi Shobo, under their Kadokawa Books imprint, published the first light novel volume in 2017. Since then, 14 volumes have been published as of August 2022.
After a manga adaptation by Jirō Oimoto began that started in May 2018, Kadokawa announced a Bofuri anime series at the end of the same year.
Season 1 ran from January to March 2020, and at the end of the last episode, season 2 was announced.
Initially set for a 2022 premiere, Bofuri season 2 was delayed until January 2023 for reasons unknown.
The September 2022 announcement of the delay was quickly followed by a teaser PV, which helped calm the fans. An official teaser visual was also released on October 6, 2022.
On November 10, 2022, Kadokawa then announced the upcoming season’s opening and ending theme songs alongside its artists.
Junko no Afilia, a female vocal group, will sing the opening theme song, “Kono Tate ni, Kakuremasu.”
The ending theme, “Step for Joy,” will be performed by another group called FRAM.
The full tracks of these songs will be released on February 28 and January 25, respectively.
